Taking to the outdoors
The Bucks County chapter of the Fox Chase Cancer Center Board of Associates will host its 19th annual garden party June 8, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Spring Oak Farm, a Mechanicsville estate. The benefit affair, which this year is titled “Splendor Under the Oaks,” will offer hors d’oeuvres, a country-style dinner, an open bar and silent and live auctions, all under a splendid canopy of majestic oak trees. Admission is $100; $250 for patrons. The Fox Chase Cancer Center was founded in 1904 in Philadelphia as the nation’s first cancer hospital. Today, about 170 clinical trials of new prevention, diagnostic and treatment techniques are conducted there at any one time.

Gaining ground
Not only are more women today practicing early detection techniques, preventing breast cancer from developing beyond its earliest stages, those who are diagnosed with it are living longer. According to the most recent statistics, when the cancer is confined to the breast, 98 percent of women survive without a reoccurrence for at least five years. Seeing significant progress such as this reinforces fundraising and awareness endeavors that originated when so little was known. Among the most prominent locally is the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia. The 18th annual installment, of which BUCKS and its sister magazine, MAINLINE, are sponsors, will be held on Mother’s Day, May 11. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 a.m. outside of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A 5K run and walk, as well as a one-mile fun walk will be available along with a number of other fundraising opportunities.

Safe and sound
The nonprofit St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center, Lawrenceville, NJ, will host its annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo and Safe Kids Day May 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Geared toward children ages three to 12, the idea is to foster a safe and fun learning environment through a range of activities. The Economy Bike Shop and Lawrenceville Police will be conducting bike inspections. Participating children will receive a free helmet that will be fitted by the center’s therapists. A safety course will teach young bike riders the rules of the road. Local YMCAs will carry the safety theme over to the pool, where they’ll stage games and various educational activities. And, for good measure, the mascots of the Trenton Devils and Trenton Thunder will be on hand to meet and greet.
