Bucks Cares Summer 2008

Saddle up

At nearly 5,000 participants and $1.8 million raised last year, The American Cancer Society’s annual Bike-a-thon is fast becoming one of the most supported single-day fundraisers in the Greater Philadelphia region. Cyclists choose their starting points based on the desired distance — Philadelphia (69 miles), Cherry Hill (55) or Hammonton (21) — with Mays Landing serving as the single finish point, except for those interested in doing the century loop (100 miles). The course is almost entirely flat, so it’s conducive to all levels of ability. This year’s Bike-a-thon is planned for July 13. Participants can ride and raise funds individually or as a team. www.ascbike.org

Stability through support

The Bucks County Women’s Business Forum has been inspiring and empowering female business owners in the region since 2002, when the nonprofit organization was founded by Doylestown resident Chanin Walsh. Free meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 8 a.m. and the third Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., with the aims of providing a stable business network and supportive environment for its members. Most sessions feature guest speakers who cover a range of topics specifically designed for the female entrepreneur, including legal aid and methods to build business. Both monthly meetings are held at the James-Lorah House, 132 North Main Street, Doylestown. www.womensbusinessforum.org

Deflating the cost of living

Immersed in the abundance of lavish settings that comprise Bucks and Hunterdon counties, it’s easy to forget that homlessness is not an issue that ends at the city’s limits. HomeSharing, Inc. of Somerset and Hunterdon counties operates under the innovative concept of pairing local residents who need to share their homes in order to be able to continue to afford to live in them with those in search of affordable housing — most of whom have incomes at or below the poverty level. The Bridgewater, NJ-based organization has seen more than 8,000 people register for its services over the last decade. For every registered homeowner — 35 percent of which are seniors — there are two seeking homes. www.homesharing.org
